Essential Workers Required to Wear Masks in OC

Starting Friday, April 24 some essential workers in Orange County are required to wear face masks while at work. The directive does not apply to customers.

Vice Chairman Andrew Do, First District Supervisor, initiated the directive synonymous with the April 1 guidance from the California Department of Public Health, suggesting face coverings to be worn in public.

“My directive is in line with face coverings guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health on April 1, 2020, and is intended to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by those who are asymptomatic. It is a strong step in the right direction,” said Vice Chairman Do.

Countywide Masks Mandatory

Essential workers for certain businesses are required to wear masks starting Friday, April 24, 2020. Currently residents do not have to wear masks under the initiative.

Workers must wear masks for the entirety of their shift and can be fined up to $1,000 and sentenced to six months imprisonment for shirking the law.

Rulings vary through each city and whichever rule is more restrictive will be enforced in that city for workers and residents.

Lake Forest business owner Ben Bach, Your CBD Store, said he will start wearing masks with the initiative.

“Right now we’re not wearing masks, we’ll start on Friday. Our customers practice social distancing and we only allow four people in the store at a time. We do have curbside pickup and free delivery or shipping for those that don’t want to come in,” Ben said.

While residents are not obligated to wear masks in public, County Health Officer Dr. Nichole Quick encourages residents to wear face coverings and follow the guidance of the California Department of Public Health.

“Residents can make their own face coverings at home from a variety of materials and should refrain from purchasing personal protective equipment that is critical and in short supply for our healthcare workers, such as N95 and surgical masks,” said Dr. Quick.
